Last night I was cleaning up the kitchen after dinner, and I noticed it was quickly approaching bedtime. In an effort to get my "helpful" Finnigan out of the kitchen so I could finish quickly and get the boys into bed I told him to run upstairs and ask Daddy to help him brush his teeth.
I then finished sweeping the floor and was about to attack a clump of crusty oatmeal on the floor with a knife when I hear Dom call calmly down the stairs "honey, can you come here please!"
I run upstairs and find Dom and Liam clustered around the bathroom door. I hear Finnigan talking and singing in the bathroom (and the tub running). It turns out that instead of asking Dom to help him brush his teeth, Finn made a beeline for the bathroom to take a bath. (not sure how tooth brushing equals bath in Finn's mind, but he is 2!) So he runs in the bathroom, closes the door, turns on the water and proceeds to strip. he calls for help because he can't pull his shirt off, and that is when we discover that the bathroom door is locked (and when Dom called me)
"I can't open it!" Finn says. We try to explain how to turn the lock so the door will open, but well, he's 2. We try to stick a bobby pin in the hole to pop the lock, but sadly, this isn't that kind of lock (I will be having words with the housing office soon!) On to plan B, we get out the screwdriver and try to take the doorknob off, hoping that by taking the doorknob off that the lock would release and we can open the door. The door knob comes off, and yet the locking mechanism remains firmly in place so we still can't open the door.
Thankfully Finn doesn't seem distressed that he is in the bathroom all alone. he is in there happily singing "Jesus I LOVE you!" at the top of his lungs. he is also trying to put the doorknob back on the door because its "broken" At this point we can see him standing near the door, singing through the hole where the doorknob used to be.
Getting desperate we think of taking the door off the hinges, but the hinges are on the inside! (gah!) Dom's second to last resort, he uses pliers and screwdrivers, and what ever else he can think of to pull the lock out of the door frame so we can get in there. We end up breaking the lock, but we finally get into Finnigan. I turned off the water, thankfully he didn't put the stopper in the tub. I was having visions of a flooded bathroom and upstairs!
Honestly, I was completely AMAZED that a bathroom lock held up so well. Its a bathroom folks! I WILL be calling housing this week and talking to them about their locks. There should be a backup way to easily pop the lock for just such circumstances! I know the government always goes with the lowest bidder, so we were especially surprised that the lock held up so well! Dom's last resort was to kick the door in, but thankfully Finn was rather content in the bathroom all by himself, and we didn't really want to buy a new door. Plus we didn't want to accidentally hurt Finn in the process of kicking the door in. I'm just so glad for the peace of God that was over us all as this happened. We were laughing our way through this circumstance, Finnigan was singing God's praises, and it only lasted about 10 minutes all said and done. I offer a special thanks to all the saints I petitioned for intercession during this ordeal, I can't even remember who I called on.
After this I did give Finn his hard earned bath, but it was a quick one. And then the boys were off to bed. Which is good, Liam was just too tired to be around anymore!

wow, that must have been scary and I can't believe it was that hard in a brand new house! but to make you feel better, you will not believe how many times Trent has locked himself in a bathroom in public places... CYS in villagio nurmerous times and they don't have a key there. Hope you guys can move on from this happily lol
